Coding agents: cost, context, limits
- TokenEconomizer (via tetumemo): Microsoft Research and UC Berkeley plugin that learns from past sessions in the same repo. Reported 18.4-30.9% lower cost on 277 SWE-Bench tasks, with Pass@1 up in 4 of 5 setups. Works with Claude Code, Codex, Copilot CLI and Pi.
- Anthropic "message threads" in the Messages API: public beta lets you send the conversation once, then only new messages. It is already on by default in Claude Code, so it is a direct token and latency lever.
- Claude Code v2.1.317: warns when
/schedulecloud tasks pick up unrequested connectors and asks before a web or shell call sends your account email. AddsonFailure: "block"for Agent SDK hook callbacks. - Claude Ultra (Theo): Theo likes the change but flags the "verification" behaviour and the 5h limits as the things to scrutinise.
- levelsio: BF1942 port cost: decompile, port to C, then WASM took about 1M output tokens (~$100 at API prices), covered by a $100/mo plan. Subscription arbitrage on heavy agent work.
- Structure the codebase before asking agents for tests: clear file and directory conventions improved test quality more than any prompt tweak, because the model knows where logic lives and what to mock.
- t3code shipping velocity (RT via Theo): claims the t3 team ships with far more velocity than larger projects. Anecdotal, but a data point on agent-native teams.
Agent memory and the MCP debate
- Is Complex Agentic Memory Always Needed? (via QuantumTransf): raw conversation history plus retrieval (RAW-RAG) beat fancier memory systems in 6 of 7 settings across four benchmarks, by up to 5.53 points. This undercuts extraction and knowledge-graph memory designs.
- beacon.sh: open-source self-improving memory for AI coding agents. Worth comparing against the raw-retrieval result above.
- stevelacey: agents almost never pick MCP: the connector install step is the blocker. A Claude Code session with a
.envof keys just uses plain APIs. - levelsio on MCP vs API: predicts MCP and API endpoints merge into one surface supporting API keys and OAuth. He is now adding MCP to his own sites.
Agent orchestration and workflow
- worktrunk: Git worktree manager built for parallel AI agent workflows, now billed as the most popular of its kind.
- Paperclip: open-source Node.js and React orchestrator for teams of agents, with goals, work tracking and cost dashboards. Bring your own agents.
- AgentFlow: runs the ticket workflow around Claude Code, Codex or Copilot CLI while the agent itself stays unchanged.
- Running an agent team from a phone: one lead agent, a review gate so nothing ships on one opinion, and persistent written memory. The MIT-licensed single-session setup is free to copy.
Computer use and terminal tooling
- vercel-labs/agent-desktop: CLI and C library that drives desktop apps on macOS, Windows and Linux through the accessibility tree. It returns JSON snapshots with element refs and uses no pixel matching.
- Agent Desktop with Claude Code field report: reading and clicking Mac apps in the background worked, but saving did not. Useful as a limits check on the above.
- llm 0.37: Simon Willison's LLM CLI and Python library, with about two months of accumulated features and fixes, including new
gpt-6.1-solandgpt-6.1-terramodels.
Models and inference mechanics
- LongCat-2.5 announcement: Meituan's natively multimodal agentic model, 1.6T total and ~48B active parameters, aimed at long-horizon coding and visual or 3D tasks.
- LongCat-2.5 long-horizon take: trained on agent trajectories at 256K and 1M sequence lengths plus large-scale RL, targeting staying useful across a long project.
- New sparse attention method for ultra-long context: r/LocalLLaMA thread on a new sparse attention approach for very long contexts. Details are in the thread.
- colibri: pure C, zero-dependency engine that runs very large MoE models by keeping active experts in RAM and streaming the rest from disk.
Vibe-coding in practice
- levelsio decompiles Battlefield 1942 with Claude Code: the raw C engine, running in the browser.
- 14 clips to a 10-minute vlog: one Claude Code prompt chained mlx-whisper transcription, frame grids, voice matching, face detection, a JSON cut list and captions, for about $0.10 of plan usage.
- HyperFrames: write HTML, CSS and seekable animations and render deterministic MP4s from a CLI or via agent skills. Agent-friendly video generation.
